Gainsborough's Family Album

Featuring over fifty works from public and private collections across the world, Gainsborough’s Family Album will provide a unique insight into the private life and motivations of one of Britain’s greatest artists. The exhibition will reunite for the first time all twelve surviving portraits of Thomas Gainsborough’s daughters and include a number of works that have never been on public display in the UK.

Open daily 10:00-18:00. Open late Friday until 21:00.

Please note this is a timed entry event with a particular 15 minute time slot to gain entry. This means you can enter the gallery within your chosen 15 minute time slot. 

However, once inside the exhibition, you can enjoy it at your own leisure until closing time

How Does It Work

You will receive an email confirmation and collect your tickets at the venue ticket desk on arrival.  Please be advised the ticket desk is located inside the gallery next to the exhibition entrance.

Getting to the Gallery:

Underground: The nearest underground stations to the Gallery are: Charing Cross 230 metres, Leicester Square 195 metres, and Embankment 490 metres. Please note these stations do not have a lift.

By rail: Charing Cross station 320 metres from the St Martin's Place entrance.

Bus: Bus numbers 24, 29 and 176 from Trafalgar Square stop C or Charing Cross Road stop K.

Car: For visitors wishing to travel by car, cab or Dial-A-Ride please note there are no parking facilities at the Gallery. Visitors can be dropped off at the ramp entrance on Orange Street which can be reached via Haymarket.

Bicycle parking: The nearest bicycle stands are opposite the main Gallery entrance on St Martin’s Place, and behind the National Gallery’s Education Centre on Orange Street.  Please note: the National Portrait Gallery Cloakroom does not accept folding bicycles. Folding bicycles can be stored at Charing Cross Station Left Luggage.
